1) the children’s reaction to Esteban is to play with him on the beach. They remove the seaweed and jelly fish from him and bury him in the sand, then unbury him repeatedly. The women think he is the most handsome man they have ever seen. They react with passion towards him and the older women compassion. They imagined him as powerful and strong. The men went to try and find out who he was. When they returned they were upset by the amount of attention the women were giving the stranger. When the men saw Esteban’s face, they were impressed. The differences of opinion come from different ages and gender, but everyone was impressed.
2) the drowned man’s stature is very large compared to the dimensions of the village. The man was tall and large. The women imagined him hunching through doorways and breaking chairs. They said he would of had the biggest house.
3) The drowned man comes to symbolize strength and unity in the village. The funereal and preparations for it brought all of the people together.
4) the villagers are proud to have Esteban. Their new plans for the village reflect this because they are decorating the village and improving it so that everyone who comes will know that it was Esteban’s village.
5) the story is unrealistic, similar to how children’s stories are. Both are myths that have a happy ending.
6) I think the story is magical realism. Things that happen in the story would not happen ordinarily, but the characters react as if it is everyday life. In the story Marquez has a section where Esteban is talking in first person, dead People don’t talk in first person.
7) the body that was found was turned into a great person through the imagination of the villagers. They imagined his life and how successful he would of been.
8) myths can change the way people view things or react to things.
9) Marquez believes that Latin America is an unsafe place because of government instability and revolution. He has hope for Latin America and should not be seen as inferior to Europe. Latin America just needs a second chance and time.
10) Faulkner says the cold war is about everyone being afraid of being blown up. The hope for humanity is in the poets and writers who tap into the old varieties
